Connecting to Wi-Fi

Using Wi-Fi, Zephyr® can offload data in regions with no cellular reception

Why Wi-Fi?

Zephyr® is able to connect to Wi-Fi, which allows EarthSense to receive diagnostic data from the unit and troubleshoot its connectivity even without a cellular data connection. For most Zephyrs this feature will never be used - but when it’s needed it’s incredibly handy.

📶
We’ve used Wi-Fi to offload data from Zephyrs in countless hard-to-reach places - in one case, even a copper mine.

Setting up a Network

By default, each Zephyr is looking for its own unique Wi-Fi network. A Wi-Fi network using these details - ideally using a smartphone - needs to be established. On an Android phone, you can change the network name (SSID) and password in your personal hotspot settings. On an iPhone you can change the password in the hotspot settings, but will need to change the name of your device in Settings > General > About > Name in order to change the network name.

For accessing or changing these details for your Zephyr, please contact our support team.

Example Wi-Fi Details SSID: ESZephyrTM700497 Password: hmnbfWYCK3 Contact our team for your Zephyr’s specific details, or to add a local network to the Zephyr’s keychain.

Connecting the Zephyr

The Zephyr will attempt Wi-Fi connections at regular intervals. By default, a Zephyr will attempt a cellular connection first, and if that fails a few times in a row, it will try Wi-Fi instead using its onboard details.

If you have the Zephyr in hand and want to speed this process up, you can prompt the Zephyr to make a Wi-Fi connection by pressing the action button 4 times, holding slightly on the last press. More detailed information is available in: How to read the Zephyr LED

Watch for Magenta

When connecting via Wi-Fi instead of cellular, the Zephyr will hold a magenta light on the LED. A successful connection is followed by a green light, an unsuccessful one will be followed by a series of red and blue flashes, which is an error message.

If your connection is successful, leave the Zephyr sampling to connect by Wi-Fi, upload its data and send diagnostic information to EarthSense. If it is unsuccessful: first, double-check the Wi-Fi credentials are correct; and second, contact EarthSense support.
